A Brief History Of The Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island received a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Ten years later, it was given the status of a “National Historic Landmark”.
The U.S. Army had began holding military prisoners at Alcatraz in the 1980’s. Detached from the mainland by cold, strong waters of San Francisco Bay, the island was an ideal location for a prison. It was assumed that no Alcatraz inmate could attempt escape by swimming and survive.
